بعد دراسته في مدرسة كاباتاس الثانوية للبنين عام 1976 وتعليمه الجامعي في كلية الطب بجامعة إسطنبول عام 1982، بدأ سابونجو العمل كأخصائي طب الأطفال في مستشفى زينب كامل لأمراض النساء وطب الأطفال في عام 1995 وشارك في مؤتمرات طبية مختلفة في ليتوانيا وإسبانيا والبرتغال وإيران في أعوام 2004 و2005 و2007 و2010.
