Specialization and Intensive Care Clinical Focus

Prof. Tugrul treats critically ill patients, including those with severe sepsis, septic shock, and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). He uses lung recruitment maneuvers — a technique involving sustained increases in airway pressure — to improve oxygenation in patients with respiratory failure. He also treats post-surgical pain using magnesium sulfate.

His work includes enteral and parenteral nutrition, which provides liquid nutrients through a tube or vein for intensive care patients. Prof. Tugrul treats metabolic alkalosis and monitors earthquake victims in trauma units. He also applies mechanical ventilation strategies to prevent ventilator-induced lung injuries. The specialist performs percutaneous tracheotomy — a procedure to create an airway through the neck — and manages end-of-life procedures in European ICU settings.

The specialist edited chapters on cell metabolism and major surgery in Clinical Intensive Care. He also translated manuals on mechanical ventilation wave shapes and spontaneous breathing models.

His research includes studies on bacterial translocation during recruitment maneuvers. He participated in international congresses in Brussels, San Francisco, and Geneva. Prof. Tugrul investigated the risk factors for mortality in nosocomial bacteremia — infections acquired within a hospital. He also studied the effects of IgM enriched immunoglobulins in severe sepsis cases.
